Icelandic voters have rejected the resumption of negotiations for accession to the European Union in a close referendum held on August 29, 2026. The results showed 52.8% voting against reopening talks, while 47.2% supported them, with a high voter turnout of 82.5%.

Negotiations for EU membership had been suspended since 2013. The primary driver for the rejection was the desire to maintain national sovereignty over fishing resources, a vital pillar of the Icelandic economy. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential loss of control over the national currency and agricultural autonomy.

Despite the vote, Iceland's relationship with the EU remains deep. The nation continues to be a member of the Schengen area and the European Economic Area (EEA), ensuring continued access to the European single market. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir stated that the government would respect the result, effectively shelving the EU accession discussion for the foreseeable future.
