Despite the rejection, Iceland maintains deep ties to the continent through the Schengen Area and the European internal market. While full membership is no longer a priority, Iceland remains a strategic partner, having signed a security and defense partnership with Brussels in March. Discussions continue regarding a potential ‘associated member’ status to foster cooperation in energy transition and geothermal expertise.
