Icelandic voters have rejected the resumption of negotiations to join the European Union in a referendum held on August 29. The result saw 52.8% of voters opposing accession, while 47.2% were in favor. The election saw a high turnout of 82.5%, the highest for a national election in Iceland since 2009.

A primary driver for the ‘no’ vote was the protection of Iceland’s fishing industry and sovereign control over marine resources. Voters expressed significant concern that EU membership would require adherence to the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), potentially forcing Iceland to cede control over its fishing quotas and management.

While some EU officials had previously signaled potential flexibility regarding fisheries, industry leaders emphasized that maintaining full legislative and decision-making power over fishing zones remains a non-negotiable priority for the nation. The outcome underscores a preference for maintaining the current status within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Schengen, which provides market access without the political integration or loss of sovereignty associated with full EU membership.
