Fast Walking Linked to Lower Risk of Cognitive Decline in Elderly

Researchers measured the walking speed of older adults and compared it with cognitive test results and brain scans. The analysis, based on three large studies, showed that participants who walked faster were about 50 % less likely to develop cognitive impairment than slower walkers. The findings, published in the journal Neurology, suggest that walking speed could serve as a quick, non‑invasive indicator of brain health, though scientists caution that the association does not prove that faster walking prevents decline.

The study emphasizes that walking speed should be evaluated alongside overall health factors such as exercise habits, nutrition, sleep quality, blood pressure and diabetes management.
