Walking speed and step counts in cognitive and mortality 연구
Overview
Research continues to establish a strong correlation between walking patterns, cognitive health, and longevity. Studies involving the UK Biobank indicate that walking 3,800 steps daily is associated with a 25 percent reduction in dementia risk, while approximately 9,800 steps per day can nearly halve that risk. Brisk walking is noted to further enhance these protective effects by improving brain blood flow.
Walking speed serves as a significant indicator of mortality risk and general physical fitness. For individuals over 65, every 0.1 m/s increase in walking speed is associated with an approximately 12 percent reduction in mortality risk. Analysis suggests that faster walking paces are linked to higher predicted lifespans, independent of BMI.
Recent findings from the University of Sydney and Monash University emphasize that walking pace can be as vital as step count. For those taking fewer than 5,000 steps daily, maintaining a brisk pace of at least 80 steps per minute is associated with a 36 percent reduction in the risk of premature death. This intensity can partially compensate for lower step totals, offering a comparable mortality risk reduction to walking 5,000 to 7,500 steps at a slower pace of 60 steps per minute. Research involving over 36,000 individuals aged 50 and older further shows that adding just 1,000 steps to a daily routine can reduce the risk of serious heart problems by approximately 17%, including a 25% reduction in stroke risk, a 22% reduction in heart failure risk, and a 9% reduction in heart attack risk.
Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis noted that these findings promote behavioral flexibility, particularly for sedentary individuals or those with physical limitations, challenging the traditional 10,000-step goal.
