Iceland's Light Beer Sales Surge as Consumers Favor Low‑Carb, Low‑Alcohol Brews

Demand for low‑carbohydrate, lower‑alcohol beers in Iceland has risen three‑ to fourfold in recent years, driving Gull Lite to become the top‑selling beer at the state retailer Vínbúðin.

Bar owners report that lite beers now account for roughly two‑thirds of all beer sales, and breweries such as Ölgerðin, Ölvisholt and others have expanded their lite portfolios, noting that product quality no longer depends on alcohol strength. Alcohol‑free options have also grown markedly.

Nutritionist Elísabet Reynisdóttir cautioned that marketing the “lite” label may encourage higher overall consumption, and authorities are addressing a surge in illegal small‑scale sales, with possible legislative action under consideration.
