ICRC warns of collapsing healthcare and malnutrition crisis in Afghanistan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued an urgent plea for the international community not to abandon Afghanistan as the nation faces a collapsing healthcare system and extreme humanitarian needs. Yasmine Praz Dessimoz, the ICRC director of operations, warned from Kabul that millions are struggling to survive amidst isolation and dwindling international aid.

According to UNICEF, approximately one million children face life-threatening severe acute malnutrition, while 3.7 million suffer from acute malnutrition. A significant decrease in international funding has already resulted in the closure of 100 specialized pediatric malnutrition clinics across the country.

The ICRC maintains Afghanistan as one of its top five global operations, supporting 46 clinics and seven rehabilitation centers for those wounded in conflict. The organization has prioritized efforts along the Durand Line due to ongoing clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan that have displaced thousands and caused civilian casualties.

Furthermore, the ICRC expressed grave concern regarding Taliban restrictions on women. While the organization has managed to retain female staff for health services, Praz Dessimoz warned that bans on higher education threaten the future of the medical profession, as there will be no educated new generation to replace current professionals.
