id Software says DOOM team remains intact after Xbox layoffs

Microsoft’s recent Xbox‑wide layoffs sparked reports that id Software’s DOOM studio had lost roughly 73.5% of its staff and was reduced to about 50 employees. Creative Director Hugo Martin told a Bethesda livestream that those claims are inaccurate, stating the studio’s size is comparable to the team that built DOOM in 2016 and that the studio has not been dismantled.

Martin also emphasized that the id Tech engine continues to receive support across Microsoft’s network, with engineers working in Frankfurt and at MachineGames in addition to the core team in Texas. He reassured fans that development on new DOOM content and the engine is ongoing, and highlighted the positive impact of recent game successes on morale.

Employees and labor groups have disputed the official narrative, noting the depth of resource cuts and filing complaints. Nonetheless, the studio asserts it remains operational and capable of delivering future titles.
