id Software confirms new Doom development despite Xbox layoffs
Microsoft’s recent restructuring of its Xbox division led to mass layoffs that hit id Software hard, with reports of 136 of the studio’s 185 employees losing their jobs – roughly half the workforce. The studio issued a public statement reassuring fans and staff, saying the remaining team is “about the same size as when we made Doom (2016)” and that it still has the personnel needed to develop games and its proprietary id Tech engine.
Industry journalist Tom Warren tweeted that “while the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven’t turned id into a support studio. Instead, they’re now in the early stages of a new Doom game.” The studio confirmed it is already working on an early‑stage Doom title, though details on setting or release remain unrevealed. The announcement also refuted rumors that the id Tech engine had been abandoned, with Microsoft stating dozens of engineers continue to support it across multiple sites.
Co‑founder John Carmack has expressed personal support for the franchise, offering to underwrite a $1 million guarantee to bring classic id titles to VR, highlighting ongoing enthusiasm for the studio’s legacy despite the cuts.
