Idaho and Oregon fire weather watch issued as dry lightning threatens region
The National Weather Service in Boise has placed a Fire Weather Watch over southern Idaho and southeastern Oregon for Friday afternoon through night. The watch targets areas including the Owyhee Mountains, Treasure Valley, Steens Mountain, and surrounding high‑desert BLM lands.
A cold front is expected to clear the skies, but it will also create atmospheric instability that fuels dry thunderstorms. These storms produce abundant lightning with little rain, igniting dry fuels and potentially spreading fire rapidly. Outflow wind gusts of 50‑60 mph could exacerbate any ignition. Officials warn the region faces one of the most dangerous fire‑ignition scenarios in the West and advise the public to avoid outdoor burning, campfires, and spark‑generating activities.
The fire danger follows a week of Red Flag Warnings and record‑dry fuel conditions across the southern Great Basin. Residents and recreationists in the remote canyons and wilderness areas are urged to have an exit plan, monitor conditions, and report any smoke immediately.
