Idaho Issues Air Quality Advisory for Three Rural Counties Amid Wildfire Smoke

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has placed an air‑quality advisory over Butte, Custer and Lemhi counties, warning that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from regional wildfires is expected to reach the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" level on the AQI. The advisory urges people with asthma, COPD, heart disease, seniors, children and pregnant individuals to limit outdoor activity and to seek medical care if symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or severe coughing appear.

The smoke originates from fires in eastern Oregon, western Idaho and northern Nevada and has already lowered temperatures in the region. State officials have prohibited open burning while the advisory is in effect. Residents are advised to keep windows closed, use clean‑air filters, consider portable air purifiers and wear N95 respirators when outdoors for extended periods. Pets should also be protected from prolonged exposure.

Local health officials stress that the risk is not limited to respiratory problems; short‑term PM2.5 exposure can also trigger cardiovascular events. The advisory will remain until air‑quality measurements fall back to moderate levels.
