Idaho voters to decide on Proposition 1 abortion initiative
Idaho voters will decide on Proposition 1, the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act, this November. If passed, the citizen-initiated statute would take effect on January 1, 2027, establishing a statutory right to abortion until fetal viability.
Proponents, including Melanie Folwell of Idahoans United for Women & Families, argue the measure is necessary because Idaho’s current near-total ban lacks exceptions for the health of the mother or fatal fetal diagnoses. Conversely, opponents such as Julianne Young of Idaho Chooses Life argue the initiative would allow elective abortions for any reason up to an undefined point of viability.
A central point of contention is the initiative's definition of fetal viability, which it describes as the point when a physician determines a fetus has a ‘significant likelihood of sustained survival’ without ‘extraordinary medical measures.’ Critics argue this language is ambiguous and could grant medical providers broad discretion during late-term pregnancies.
In a recent voter forum in Rexburg, U.S. Senate candidate Todd Achilles also addressed voters, discussing economic concerns and the current state of Congress.
