iDEAL and Wero transition targeted by phishing surge

The Fraudehelpdesk and iDEAL have issued warnings regarding a surge in phishing emails targeting Dutch consumers. Scammers are exploiting the ongoing transition from the iDEAL payment system to the European digital wallet, Wero.

These fraudulent messages, often appearing to come from ‘iDEAL-WeroNL’, claim that users are entitled to a refund from Worldpay B.V. or must verify their identity to complete the transition. The emails use high-pressure tactics, such as deadlines and promises of quick payouts, to trick recipients into clicking malicious links and providing sensitive personal or banking information.

Reports indicate a significant increase in these attacks; while only a few were reported daily at the start of the year, the number peaked at approximately 100 reports per day in July. Currence, the company behind iDEAL and Wero, emphasizes that the transition is a legitimate process but stresses that users will never be asked via email to confirm personal data, start a verification process, or activate software. Consumers are advised to delete suspicious emails and report them to their banks.
