Dutch iDEAL to Wero payment transition

Overview

The Dutch payment landscape is undergoing a transition as the iDEAL scheme is being replaced by a new European digital wallet platform called Wero. This shift has technical implications for banking hardware; for instance, ING announced that starting in October, customers using the bank’s Scanner for internet banking will no longer be able to use iDEAL because the hardware cannot support Wero’s requirements. Such users will be encouraged to switch to mobile apps or use alternative methods like credit cards and bank transfers.

As the transition progresses, there has been a significant surge in fraudulent activity. Scammers are exploiting the change through phishing emails, often using names like ‘iDEAL-WeroNL’ to trick consumers. These attacks frequently claim users are due a refund or must verify their identity to complete the transition. Reports of these phishing attempts increased from a few daily incidents at the start of the year to a peak of approximately 100 reports per day in July. Authorities and Currence, the company behind the platforms, have warned that legitimate processes will never require users to confirm personal data or activate software via email.
