Idlib weapons warehouse explosion kills at least 14 people

An explosion at a temporary weapons and war remnants warehouse near Sarmada in Idlib province, Syria, has killed at least 14 people and injured 11 others. The facility was being used to collect munitions from the civil war (2011–2024) prior to transport.

Initial assessments by emergency officials suggest the blast was triggered by stored ammunition. The explosion caused significant damage to nearby commercial and industrial buildings and produced a large plume of black smoke. Search and rescue operations by the Syrian Civil Defense and the Syrian Red Crescent are ongoing, though secondary explosions have complicated efforts to reach those potentially trapped under rubble.

Security forces have cordoned off the Burj al-Nimra area to ensure civilian safety. Local witnesses have criticized the placement of such high-risk storage facilities in proximity to residential and commercial zones. The death toll may rise as medical officials report several serious injuries among the wounded.
