Ammunition depot explosions in Syria

Overview

In early September 2026, a series of explosions involving ammunition storage facilities occurred across Syria. On September 9, an explosion at a temporary weapons warehouse near Sarmada in Idlib province killed at least 14 people and injured 11 others. On September 12, a subsequent explosion was reported in the Al-Dmayr area on the outskirts of Damascus, originating from an ammunition depot and triggering a fire in the village of Al-Shajara.

On September 19, an explosion at a Syrian Arab Army weapons cache in Ayyash, Deir Az Zor province, killed eleven soldiers and injured nine others. State broadcaster Al Ikhbiriya reported that the soldiers were ‘engaged in transporting heavy ammunition’ at the time.

On September 20 and 21, powerful explosions struck a Syrian Ministry of Defense ammunition warehouse in the Al-Ais area of the southern Aleppo countryside. The initial blast triggered multiple secondary explosions, injuring at least four people. Faisal Mohammad Ali, head of civil protection operations in Aleppo, stated that the ongoing explosions hindered access for ambulances and rescue teams. In response, the Aleppo Internal Security Command closed the Damascus-Aleppo international highway and several auxiliary roads.

Following the Al-Ais incident, Syrian authorities launched an official investigation. The Ministry of Defense stated it will implement measures to protect military personnel and secure sites to prevent future occurrences. This event marks the fifth such incident involving military arsenals or temporary storage centers in Syria within a three-week period. This is part of a broader trend, with at least 16 explosions hitting arms storage facilities in Syria since December 2024.
