Idris Elba says a Black James Bond is unrealistic

British actor Idris Elba told GQ that the long‑running rumours about him becoming the next 007 were never serious. He said a Black Bond “is not realistic” because, in his view, some markets would not accept a Black African male in the role and the character should remain “pure escapism” rather than being made “woke.”

Elba added that the franchise’s worldwide appeal means producers must consider audience preferences across cultures. He noted that the idea of a Black Bond has been discussed since Daniel Craig’s 2008 comments after Barack Obama’s election, but he has always regarded the speculation as a compliment, not a viable casting option. The interview sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many accusing him of downplaying representation.

The discussion comes as Amazon MGM Studios, which now controls the Bond franchise, has begun the search for a new actor to succeed Daniel Craig. Other actors such as Henry Cavill, Cillian Murphy and several younger candidates have also been mentioned in the ongoing casting hunt.
