Idris Elba says James Bond should not be cast as a ‘woke’ black lead

Idris Elba, long‑time subject of speculation to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond, told GQ that casting a black actor or turning the iconic spy into a “woke” version is unrealistic and could alienate some markets. He said, “Bond is written the way he is for a reason… not all audiences will accept a black African to play Bond. It’s not what they want in their culture. Period.”

Amazon, the new owner of the franchise, has launched a casting search led by veteran casting director Nina Gold. The process seeks a younger actor, with names such as Callum Turner, Louis Partridge, Aaron Taylor‑Johnson, Harris Dickinson, Theo James and Jack Lowden mentioned. Elba, who is currently appearing in a film project, made his comments as auditions for the next Bond film are underway.
