IEA and Greek energy leaders discuss electrification and LNG infrastructure
The International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies electricity as a primary driver of future economic growth. As electrification accelerates across transport, buildings, and industry, it enhances productivity and efficiency. Currently, electricity accounts for approximately 23% of global final energy consumption. The IEA notes that electric technologies are significantly more efficient than conventional ones; for example, electric vehicles convert 85–90% of energy into motion, compared to only 25–35% for internal combustion engines.
In Greece, energy strategy is shifting toward the Vertical Energy Corridor to facilitate the transport of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Southeast and Central Europe. Alexandros Exarchou, CEO of AKTOR Group and ATLANTIC SEE LNG TRADE, highlighted the importance of diversifying supply sources following the EU's move to phase out Russian gas. Atlantic See LNG Trade has secured binding agreements with Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina to supply American LNG, utilizing existing Greek infrastructure to serve markets outside of Greece.
