IEBC rejects claims of illegal voter registration at Uganda border

Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed allegations that Ugandan nationals are illegally obtaining Kenyan identity cards to register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election. The commission described the claims, which suggest cross-border voter smuggling and the processing of Kenyan IDs within Uganda, as “sensationalised and unsubstantiated.”

The IEBC stated that no credible evidence has been submitted by any individual or organization to support these claims of malpractice. While the commission warned that unverified reports could undermine public confidence in the electoral process, it maintained that it would investigate any proven wrongdoing, which could lead to criminal prosecution under Kenyan law.

These allegations follow an investigative report claiming that the process for non-citizens to acquire Kenyan identification and voter status is seamless. Meanwhile, the IEBC reported that during its Continuous Voter Registration exercise held between September 2025 and April 2026, it registered over 2.6 million new voters nationwide.
