Kenya electoral registration dispute

Overview

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya has denied allegations of electoral malpractice regarding the 2027 General Election. Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused the administration of President William Ruto of attempting to influence polls through political mobilization near the Kenya-Uganda border, alleging that foreign nationals are being registered as Kenyan voters.

The IEBC dismissed these claims as “sensationalised and unsubstantiated,” stating that no credible evidence has been provided to support reports of cross-border voter smuggling or the illegal processing of Kenyan identity cards within Uganda. The commission clarified that its mandate is limited to registering eligible citizens and noted that it does not issue national identity cards. While the IEBC warned that unverified reports could undermine public confidence, it stated it would investigate any proven wrongdoing that could lead to criminal prosecution.

In a separate report, the IEBC noted that its Continuous Voter Registration exercise, conducted between September 2025 and April 2026, resulted in the registration of over 2.6 million new voters nationwide.
