Lemnos wildfire triggers evacuations and maritime rescues
A wildfire broke out in the Thanos area of Lemnos, Greece, on Friday afternoon, prompting emergency evacuations and maritime rescue operations. The blaze, which initially affected low vegetation and a waste area, led to the evacuation of residents in the Agia Paraskevi and Profitis Ilias districts via 112 emergency alerts.
To ensure safety, the Hellenic Coast Guard coordinated the evacuation of 59 people from Thanos beach using a patrol boat, a rescue boat, a fishing boat, and five private vessels. These individuals were transported to Myrina harbour.
Firefighting efforts involved 26 firefighters, nine vehicles, and a ground crew, supported by six aircraft and one helicopter. While the situation has improved and authorities report there is no longer an active fire front, crews remain on site to manage residual smoke and prevent reignition. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
