IFP mayoral candidate Mlungisi Mabaso proposes revenue-driven revival for Johannesburg

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) mayoral candidate Mlungisi Mabaso outlined a plan to restore Johannesburg’s former prosperity at an event in Soweto. He said the city must cut its reliance on government grants and bank loans, close revenue‑leakage points, and build a stable revenue base to fund infrastructure and attract large businesses. Mabaso also called for reclaiming illegal residential settlements on industrial sites and creating mass employment to boost municipal income and reduce dependence on handouts.

IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa dismissed media reports of factionalism within the party ahead of the 2026 local government elections. He affirmed unity behind party president Velenkosini Hlabisa and deputy president Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, noting that the party’s national elective conference will be held no later than March 2027 to focus on the upcoming elections.
