IG Metall demands 5 percent wage increase for industry negotiations
The IG Metall union has announced a demand for a 5 percent wage increase ahead of collective bargaining negotiations in the metal and electrical industries, scheduled to begin on October 7. The union's proposal aims to strengthen purchasing power and protect jobs across a highly varied economic landscape.
According to the union, the industry is experiencing a split: sectors such as shipbuilding, rail vehicles, medical technology, aerospace, and defense are seeing strong order volumes, while the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors are facing significant challenges. To address this disparity, IG Metall is seeking improved conditions for lower-paid employees and a contractual profit-sharing mechanism for booming companies.
Union leadership has emphasized a stance of ‘combative realism,’ rejecting threats of relocation as a distraction from management issues. While the union seeks to secure jobs and offset rising prices, some observers suggest that the diverse economic realities of the various sub-sectors may require compromise to maintain the stability of the industrial location.
