German industry faces mixed outlook with manufacturing orders rising amid automotive crisis

The German industrial sector is experiencing a period of mixed signals. While the manufacturing order backlog reached a new all-time high in July 2026, rising with a 1.5% increase from the previous month, specific sectors face significant downturns. The machine tool industry is seeing a recovery in orders, but the VDMA predicts a 2% decline in real production for 2026, marking the fourth consecutive year of contraction, with growth not expected until 2027.

In the automotive sector, a crisis is unfolding. Regional leaders from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Lower Saxony have issued an urgent appeal to Berlin and Brussels, warning of irreversible damage to the industry. Volkswagen is undergoing major restructuring, with plans to cut 50,000 jobs and potentially close four plants to improve margins. Meanwhile, the IG Metall union reports that while 63% of works councils see good capacity utilization, one in six companies with positive prospects is still cutting permanent staff.

Additionally, producer prices rose by 4.6% in August 2026 compared to the previous year, driven largely by an 8.3% increase in energy costs.
