IG Metall threatens strikes amid German industrial labor disputes

The German industrial sector is facing significant labor unrest as IG Metall enters critical wage negotiations and threatens strikes. In the metal and electrical industries, the union is demanding a five percent wage increase and profit-sharing models to protect workers amidst economic challenges.

In the automotive sector, tensions are escalating. IG Metall leadership has threatened industrial action if employers refuse to negotiate, specifically criticizing Volkswagen's decision to terminate ten collective agreements. Negotiators have labeled the move by Volkswagen's board as “irresponsible.” Additionally, the union has rejected proposals from Mercedes-Benz to extend working hours, calling such moves a “pure provocation.”

Structural changes are also leading to job losses. The Japanese component manufacturer Nidec announced it will close its long-standing production site in Bietigheim-Bissingen by the end of 2027, resulting in the loss of 116 jobs. Meanwhile, labor representatives have warned of a broader decline in worker rights and a monthly loss of approximately 15,000 jobs across German industry.
