Igam settles R$ 62.6 million water usage fee debt
The Minas Gerais Institute for Water Management (Igam) has completed the payment of a R$ 62.6 million historical debt related to water usage fees. These funds are designated for Watershed Committees and equivalent basin agency entities.
The total amount covers accumulated values from 2016 to 2019 and was settled through a 72-installment schedule that began in 2020 and concluded in September 2026. The process required coordination between Igam and the State Secretariat of Finance (SEF).
Under state law, 92.5% of the collected funds are allocated to studies, programs, projects, and works outlined in Water Resource Plans, such as rural sanitation, spring conservation, and flood prevention. The remaining 7.5% covers administrative costs for managing entities. Officials noted that this regularization provides greater financial predictability for planned environmental and infrastructure actions within the river basins.
