Ignace Deen Hospital reconstruction begins in Conakry

The Guinean government has initiated the total reconstruction of the 120-year-old Ignace Deen University Hospital (CHU) in Conakry. Following instructions from President Mamadi Doumbouya, the project aims to transform the facility into a sub-regional center of excellence with modern technical platforms and a new oncology center.

Health Minister Khaïté Sall announced that the hospital has been vacated to allow for demolition and rebuilding, a process expected to take approximately four years, with construction slated to begin before the end of 2026. To ensure continuity of care, 84 patients requiring immediate attention were transferred to other facilities, including the Donka National Hospital and the Sino-Guinean Friendship Hospital.

Medical services and staff are being temporarily relocated to Camayenne Camp, including its military hospital, which is being adapted to accommodate the transferred services within a month. The state is covering all costs related to patient transfers and equipment relocation. While the long-term goal is to reduce the need for expensive medical evacuations abroad, the total financial cost of the reconstruction has not yet been disclosed.
