Republika Srpska tensions rise after Minister Helez calls for its abolition
Political tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina have escalated following statements by Minister of Defense Zukan Helez, who called for the abolition of Republika Srpska, labeling it a ‘genocidal para-state entity.’ This move has drawn sharp condemnation from Serbian officials, including Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, who warned that such rhetoric threatens the Dayton Peace Agreement and regional stability. Milorad Dodik and Nenad Nešić also criticized Helez, accusing him of inciting ethnic hatred and undermining the constitutional order.
Separately, the funeral of Ratko Mladić has sparked significant controversy across the region. Croatian lawmaker Igor Peternel has called on the European Union and Croatia to ban Patriarch Porfirije of the Serbian Orthodox Church from entering the EU, accusing him of glorifying the convicted war criminal. The Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina also expressed deep concern regarding the public glorification of Mladić and the presence of high-ranking Serbian officials at the ceremony.
