Igoumenitsa Port seizure: 300 kg of skunk cannabis found in meat truck
Greek authorities at the Port of Igoumenitsa seized approximately 300.88 kilograms of hydroponic skunk cannabis hidden within a commercial truck. The operation, conducted by the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and the Drug Enforcement Directorate with the assistance of a detection dog, targeted a vehicle transporting a legitimate cargo of fresh meat.
The drugs were found in 296 airtight nylon packages distributed across 24 cardboard containers on pallets. The shipment was reportedly sourced from unknown individuals in Spain and transported via Ancona, Italy, before arriving in Greece. Authorities estimate the wholesale value of the seized cannabis to be approximately 1.2 million euros.
A 36-year-old professional driver was arrested at the scene. The suspect, who has a prior criminal record involving organized crime and was under a court-ordered travel ban, failed to disclose the exact location of the loading in Spain or the final recipient of the drugs. Investigators are examining whether the shipment was intended for the Greek market or was being trafficked through Greece toward Turkey.
