Iguazú Falls experiences increased river flow due to El Niño

The Iguazú National Park has implemented temporary closures and circuit restrictions due to a significant increase in the Iguazú River's flow, driven by the El Niño phenomenon. The river's flow reached 16 million liters per second, prompting authorities to monitor the structural integrity of visitor walkways.

To prevent damage similar to the floods of 2022 and 2023, officials and the concessionaire Iguazú Argentina have decided to dismantle the walkway leading to the Garganta del Diablo, leaving only the concrete pilings to allow water and debris to pass without obstruction. The walkways utilize a system of foldable railings designed to reduce resistance against high water levels and floating logs.

Despite the surge, tourism in the region remains largely unaffected. Visitors can still access various attractions in Puerto Iguazú, including wildlife rescue centers and Mbya village tours, or visit the Brazilian side of the falls.
