Iguazu Falls flooding persists with record flow rates

Overview

The Iguazu Falls continue to experience historic flooding driven by the El Niño phenomenon and extreme rainfall. Water flow has reached critical levels, with recent reports indicating surges of up to 16 million liters per second—significantly exceeding the typical 1.5 to 1.8 million liters per second range. In response to the intensifying volume, authorities in Argentina and Brazil have maintained significant restrictions on tourist circuits. To prevent structural damage similar to the floods of 2022 and 2023, officials and the concessionaire Iguazú Argentina have dismantled the walkway leading to the Garganta del Diablo, leaving only concrete pilings to allow water and debris to pass. In Brazil, walkways such as the Poço Preto and Bananeiras paths remain closed, and protective railings have been removed. In Argentina, the National Parks Administration has closed the Upper Circuit as the Iguazú River reached heights of 28 meters. The flooding has caused widespread regional disruptions. In Chaco, over 2,000 people have been evacuated or self-evacuated as the Paraná and Paraguay rivers rise, with the Paraná reaching levels above 7.2 meters in areas like Barranqueras. In Misiones, 14 fluvial border crossings remain closed, and international river services in Puerto Iguazú have been suspended. In Corrientes, water coverage in the Paraná valley increased by 53.4% between September and October, and more than 550 people have been displaced in Itatí. In Entre Ríos, authorities are moving to declare a one-year agricultural emergency to mitigate the impact on livestock production. Additionally, in Neuquén, heavy rains have isolated rural communities and impacted logistics in the Vaca Muerta region, prompting a six-month meteorological emergency declaration by the governor. To mitigate health risks associated with the flooding, the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health has recommended reinforcing vaccinations against dengue, tetanus, influenza, and hepatitis A.
