Iguazu Falls faces historic flooding due to El Niño
The El Niño phenomenon has caused historic flooding in the Iguazu River, leading to significant operational changes at the Iguazu Falls. Due to extraordinary water flow—with some reports indicating peaks exceeding 8 million liters per second—authorities have taken preventive measures to protect infrastructure.
In Argentina, the National Parks Administration has closed the Garganta del Diablo circuit. To prevent structural damage and loss of materials, technical teams have begun dismantling the metal walkways, leaving only the concrete pilings. While the most iconic viewpoint is restricted, the Upper and Lower circuits of the National Park remain open to tourists.
On the Brazilian side, authorities have also closed certain viewpoints due to the rising river levels. Meanwhile, extreme weather continues to affect Argentina, with the National Meteorological Service issuing orange alerts for wind and yellow alerts for storms and rain. In Monte Hermoso, a strong storm surge has caused seawater to advance into residential areas.
