Iguazu Falls water levels surge following heavy rainfall
Heavy rainfall has caused a massive surge in the Iguazu River, with water flow reaching 12,000 cubic metres per second. The increased volume has transformed the Iguazu Falls into a powerful torrent, prompting authorities to implement safety restrictions at Iguazu National Park.
In response to the rising water, officials temporarily closed prominent attractions such as Devil’s Throat and raised walkways to protect visitors. While access was partially restored following safety inspections, officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
The extreme weather is linked to the El Niño climate phenomenon, which has caused significant weather anomalies. In addition to the surge at the falls, flooding has affected neighboring Paraguay, forcing some families to evacuate their homes. Experts note that while El Niño contributes to the intense rainfall in this region, the current conditions are exceptionally strong.
