Indonesia Composite Index closes lower at 6,394 amid geopolitical tensions

The Indonesia Composite Index (IHSG) experienced significant volatility during mid-August 2026. On Wednesday, August 19, the index opened lower at 6,408 and eventually closed down 0.86 percent at 6,394. This decline was attributed to geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as investor anticipation regarding Bank Indonesia's monetary policy.

Bank Indonesia decided to maintain the BI-Rate at 5.75 percent, a move aimed at stabilizing the Rupiah, which strengthened slightly to Rp17,840 per US dollar. In the corporate sector, SEFAS Group reached an agreement to acquire 100 percent of Shell's gas station business in Indonesia.

In the commodities market, coal prices rose to US$ 134.75 per ton. While Indonesian coal remains a key supplier to China, market participants are monitoring potential supply constraints and shifts toward Russian or Australian coal. Meanwhile, analysts have provided various stock recommendations, such as PT Darma Henwa Tbk and PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk, amidst the market's fluctuating trends.
