IIO investigates Saanich arrest involving use of force

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) has launched an investigation into an arrest in Saanich involving an alleged assault at a residence on Woodhall Drive.

Following a call on Friday, September 18, police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team engaged in several hours of negotiations with a man. Upon his arrest, officers reportedly used less-lethal weapons and a police service dog. The individual was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The IIO is currently seeking witnesses to provide information regarding the incident. The agency will determine if the investigation continues based on whether the injuries meet the threshold of serious harm and if there is a connection to officer actions or inactions.
