IIT Delhi Director warns of disciplinary action amid student protests
Protests at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have escalated following the death of 31-year-old MSc physics student Rishikesh Kumar on August 22, 2026. Students have been demonstrating for six consecutive days, demanding an independent investigation, institutional accountability, and compensation for the deceased student's family.
IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee has warned of disciplinary action against protesters for disrupting campus operations. Banerjee noted that demonstrations escalated on the night of August 27, with protesters entering residential areas and using “unsavoury, humiliating and threatening language” outside faculty housing. The administration stated such behavior compromises the safety and privacy of faculty members and their families.
In response to the incident, the institute has reconstituted its external inquiry committee, appointing retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta as the new chairperson. The committee is tasked with reviewing the circumstances surrounding the student's death. Additionally, the institute announced new student welfare measures, including mental health support, the appointment of an external ombudsperson, and financial assistance for the deceased student's family through a benevolent fund.
Activists, including Common Cause founder Abhijit Dipe, have used the incident to call for a broader review of the education system, citing concerns over student safety and mental health in premier institutions.
