Following the August 22 death of M.Sc. Physics student Rishikesh Kumar, protests at IIT Delhi have entered a period of heightened tension. While the administration maintains that Kumar received medical reviews and approved semester withdrawals, students have questioned if seeking help for anxiety contributed to subsequent academic and accommodation difficulties.

This incident coincides with broader scrutiny of student attrition in India. Data provided to Parliament by the Education Ministry revealed that over 13,000 students from SC, ST, and OBC communities discontinued studies across central universities, IITs, and IIMs over a five-year period. Within the IIT system specifically, this included 2,066 OBC, 1,068 SC, and 408 ST students. Consequently, a Supreme Court task force has been tasked with investigating potential discrimination and the needs of marginalized communities.
