IKEA announces 130 million euro expansion in Romania and emergency roles in Denmark

IKEA has announced a major expansion plan in Romania, committing approximately 130 million euros for the 2027-2029 period. This budget includes 125 million euros for operational development and 4.4 million euros dedicated to price reductions in fiscal year 2027. The retailer intends to open 10 new customer meeting points, targeting both large-scale stores and smaller formats of roughly 400 square meters. Planned locations include Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Pitești, and Galați, with potential partnerships with other retailers to facilitate market entry.

In Denmark, IKEA is preparing to serve as a resource for emergency preparedness. As part of the Danish Corporate Coalition for Crisis Preparedness, the company may transform its stores into emergency shelters or temporary hospitals during crises such as power outages, floods, or infrastructure attacks. This initiative aligns with the European Union’s Preparedness Union Strategy, which encourages closer cooperation between governments and the business sector to maintain societal functions during hybrid threats or large-scale emergencies.
