IKEA expansion and preparedness initiatives

Overview

IKEA has announced a significant expansion strategy in Romania, committing approximately 130 million euros for the 2027–2029 period. This investment includes 125 million euros for operational development and 4.4 million euros for price reductions in fiscal year 2027. The retailer plans to establish 10 new customer meeting points, ranging from large stores to smaller 400-square-meter formats, in cities such as Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Pitești, and Galați.

Regarding the expansion in Cluj-Napoca, the company has officially confirmed plans for its fourth Romanian store as part of the RIVUS mixed-use urban redevelopment project. Scheduled to open during the 2029 fiscal year, the approximately 17,000-square-meter facility will deviate from traditional standalone models. Instead of an independent unit with dedicated parking, the store will be integrated into a complex featuring commercial, cultural, entertainment, and office spaces. The location will offer the standard product range, home planning services, and a Swedish restaurant and deli, emphasizing a model where customers can shop in-store or order online for delivery. Veronica Matei, IKEA South East Europe Country Real Estate Manager, stated the goal is to bring the brand closer to people by being “part of the community's daily life rather than a destination requiring specific travel.”

In addition to retail growth, IKEA is engaging in emergency preparedness in Denmark. Through the Danish Corporate Coalition for Crisis Preparedness, the company may repurpose its stores into temporary hospitals or emergency shelters during crises such as floods, power outages, or infrastructure attacks, aligning with the European Union’s Preparedness Union Strategy.
