Ildong Bioscience publishes probiotic gut health research in Nutrients

Ildong Bioscience, a subsidiary of Ildong Pharmaceutical Group, has published research regarding its proprietary probiotic strain, ‘IDCC 1201’, in the international academic journal ‘Nutrients’.

The study utilized a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving adults with functional bowel disorders (FBD). Participants consumed at least 5 billion CFU of IDCC 1201 once daily for eight weeks. Results indicated that the group consuming the strain experienced an approximately 50% reduction in abdominal bloating and a 65% decrease in post-defecation discomfort compared to baseline levels, showing statistically significant differences from the placebo group. Additionally, improvements were noted in the body image domain of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life (IBS-QOL) assessment.

Microbiome analysis revealed increases in Ruminococcus bromii, which aids short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and Bifidobacterium, which helps maintain intestinal balance. The study also observed an increase in Agathobacter rectalis, a bacterium important for intestinal mucosal and barrier health. Metabolite analysis showed significant increases in alanine and proline, alongside changes in tryptophan, phytosphingosine, lactic acid, and GABA. The company plans to pursue further research to clarify the strain's mechanisms and accelerate the commercialization of functional probiotic materials.
