Ilia Topuria returns to training following first career defeat

Former two-division UFC champion Ilia Topuria has returned to training following his first professional defeat. Topuria lost his lightweight title to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, a fight that was stopped between rounds four and five due to injuries, including orbital fractures and a broken nose.

Topuria’s physical trainer, Jesús Gallo, indicated that a return to the octagon could occur in the first quarter of 2027, potentially as early as February. While a rematch with Gaethje is a possibility, other contenders like Arman Tsarukyan remain in the lightweight mix.

Meanwhile, UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett has expressed strong interest in a matchup against Topuria. Pimblett suggested that a season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ featuring the two would be an effective way to settle their ongoing feud before a professional fight. Pimblett, coming off a submission victory over Benoit Saint-Denis, stated he aims to defeat Topuria quickly enough to force him to move back down to the featherweight division.
