Ilia Topuria recovery and Gaethje retirement rumors

Overview

Following his TKO loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, Ilia Topuria has alleged that Gaethje used tampered or ‘weird’ gloves containing illegal padding. While athletic regulators and referee John McCarthy dismissed these claims, stating equipment was “fine and totally within regulations,” the controversy has drawn attention from other fighters. Gaethje has dismissed the allegations as a tactic for ‘social media engagement and clickbait’ and clarified that Topuria’s coaches, rather than the fighter, decided to stop the bout.

Topuria is recovering from orbital fractures and a broken nose. While his trainer, Jesús Gallo, has indicated a return could occur in the first quarter of 2027, Topuria has since announced he is medically cleared and has resumed training in Georgia with boxer Lasha Guruli. His manager, Malki Kawa, has stated the team is focused exclusively on a rematch with Gaethje, though Gaethje’s management has suggested a rematch is unlikely, pointing instead toward contender Arman Tsarukyan.

Amidst this, Gaethje faces uncertainty regarding his future, with discussions involving potential retirement or a high-profile bout against Conor McGregor. Meanwhile, Topuria remains a target for several contenders. Paddy Pimblett has mocked Topuria as a ‘sore loser’ and suggested a matchup on ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ while Renato Moicano has also expressed interest in fighting the former champion. Additionally, Alexander Volkanovski has signaled interest in a rematch with Topuria, provided it is for the lightweight title.
