Ilie Bolojan's Stalemate Keeps Romania Without Government
Romania has been without a functioning government for five to six weeks as internal disputes within the National Liberal Party (PNL) and opposition parties stall coalition talks. Ilie Bolojan, the PNL leader, is widely criticised for preventing the formation of a new cabinet, with commentators describing his actions as “completely irresponsible” and driven by personal ambition rather than national interest.
Former US ambassador Adrian Zuckerman warned that the prolonged deadlock threatens Romania’s already severe economic situation and could undermine the country’s strategic partnership with the United States. He accused Bolojan of fostering “a sorosist, anti‑American movement” and aligning with foreign actors that do not serve Romania’s interests. Zuckerman emphasized the need for a swift government formation to address the country’s economic crisis and maintain stability.
Local journalists echo the criticism, noting that Bolojan’s attempts to reshape the PNL’s statutes and concentrate power threaten democratic norms. The impasse has left the Romanian parliament unable to pass key legislation, deepening public frustration amid rising economic pressures.
