Illegal mining threatens Panguana Biological Station in Peru

Illegal mining activities are threatening the Panguana Biological Station, the first research center in the Peruvian Amazon. Established in 1968, the station has conducted biodiversity studies involving scientists from 30 countries for nearly 60 years.

In the Yuyapichis district of the Puerto Inca province, illegal mining has destroyed over 100 hectares of forest in less than two years. The devastation includes the destruction of forests and the Yuyapichis riverbed. Within the 135.6-hectare Panguana Private Conservation Area, mining has already encroached upon more than 12 hectares as of last December.

Beyond environmental destruction, the activities pose direct threats to researchers and staff. The Panguana Foundation, led by director Juliane Koepcke, is calling for urgent action to protect the site's ongoing work in environmental education, restoration, and academic training.
