Illinois Democrats expand supermajorities in General Assembly elections

Democrats in Illinois are poised to significantly expand their supermajorities in both the House and Senate following recent election results. In the House, the party is on track to reach as many as 85 seats, potentially leaving Republicans with only 33. In the Senate, Democrats are projected to increase their dominance to as many as 46 seats, which would reduce the Republican caucus to 13.

Key victories included Nabeela Syed winning the 26th Senate District in a highly expensive contest, and Democratic gains in the 47th and 52nd House districts. The party also saw success in several Senate districts, including the 24th, 33rd, and 56th.

These gains come amid political scrutiny for House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch regarding his handling of sexual harassment allegations involving former member Harry Benton. While the Democratic party saw broad success in statewide offices and legislative seats, the impact of recent scandals remains a focal point in competitive districts, such as the race for the 97th House District.
