Illinois Democratic legislative supermajority expansion

Overview

Following recent elections, Democrats in Illinois are poised to significantly expand their supermajorities in both the House and Senate. In the House, the party is on track to reach as many as 85 seats, while in the Senate, they are projected to increase their dominance to as many as 46 seats.

With this strengthened position, Illinois Democrats are preparing an aggressive legislative agenda. Key priorities include rolling back policies from the Trump administration, pursuing immigration reform, and advocating for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Other stated goals include advancing Medicare for All, raising the minimum wage, and addressing housing affordability. Additionally, some members of the Illinois delegation intend to use the House Oversight Committee to conduct investigations into the Trump administration, specifically targeting figures such as White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
