Illinois expands medical cannabis eligibility and dispensary options

Illinois state agencies have announced significant updates to the state's medical cannabis program. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has added polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) with chronic pain and sickle cell disease to the list of debilitating conditions qualifying residents for medical cannabis treatment. This expansion brings the total number of approved conditions to 58.

Simultaneously, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has released an application process allowing existing adult-use dispensaries to obtain medical sales licenses. This move, part of legislation signed by Governor JB Pritzker, enables adult-use businesses to access lower tax rates for medical products. To qualify, dispensaries must submit a $5,000 non-refundable fee, provide patient prioritization plans, and demonstrate dedicated consultation areas for medical patients.
