Clown‑costumed 15‑year‑old charged with murder in East St. Louis

A 15‑year‑old male wearing a clown costume was arrested in East St. Louis, Illinois, after stabbing 78‑year‑old John Wesley Allen Sr. to death at a bus stop on the night of August 3, 2026. Doorbell and security‑camera footage captured the teen approaching a residence, whispering “I’m looking for you,” and later walking the streets with a large knife before the fatal attack. Allen, a veteran from Jennings, Missouri, was found with multiple stab wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.

Illinois State Police identified the suspect from the video, located him at a nearby home, and took him into custody. He has been charged with first‑degree murder, and prosecutors have asked that the case be tried in adult court. The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution. No motive has been disclosed, and the investigation continues to collect additional surveillance recordings.

The incident has drawn national attention due to the unusual costume, the use of doorbell‑camera evidence, and the debate over trying a minor as an adult.
