Ilva steelworks status frozen pending Supreme Court ruling
The future of the former Ilva steelworks in Taranto is currently in a state of suspension as stakeholders await a decisive ruling from the Italian Supreme Court. A hearing is scheduled for October 20 to address the appeal against the Milan Court of Appeal's decision to close the plant's hot area. In anticipation of this ruling, commissioners from Acciaierie d’Italia are preparing to request an extension of the October 26 deadline for decommissioning the blast furnaces.
Parallel to these legal developments, the Italian government and major trade unions have held discussions at Palazzo Chigi to develop worker protection measures. Negotiators are considering a special emergency wage supplement (CIG) in derogation of standard rules to provide immediate support for both direct and indirect employees. This measure is intended to serve as a bridge until a permanent industrial solution is reached.
Furthermore, the government is planning a reindustrialization process for the Taranto region. This strategy involves various investment projects and the strengthening of institutional development contracts (Cis) to encourage new employment and sustainable industrial models.
